Complexity, Agility, Recoverability

Complexity, change and recovery: the three measures and the records behind each.
Meridian Grid is a fictional demonstration organisation.

C/A/RC/A/RThree separate scores for a team or service: Complexity, Agility and Recoverability. Each uses current evidence and the customer’s stated scoring rules. gives you three separate views of a team or service: what it depends on, how readily it can change, and how it can recover after disruption.

  • Complexity: the structure and dependencies it must manage. For example, several systems and a hard-to-replace supplier can make a service complicated even when its internal team is small.
  • Agility: its ability to change. Change lead timesLead timeThe elapsed time between starting a request or handoff and completing it. are one possible source of evidence.
  • RecoverabilityRecoverabilityThe R in C/A/R: how well a team or service restores acceptable service after a failure. Recovery times and tested alternatives can supply evidence.: its ability to restore acceptable service after a failure. Recovery times and tested alternatives can supply evidence.

How to read a score. A calibrationCalibrationThe customer's own rule that turns raw figures, such as a gauge, a workflow history or an incident log, into a C/A/R score. A score moves when the calibration moves, and the change is recorded. is the agreed rule that converts observations into an indicator. Open How these are assessed, with sources to see that rule, the sources, dates and whether a higher value is favourable. A score of 60 has no universal meaning: compare only where the definitions, scope and observation periods are compatible.

Scope means the teams and services included in the calculation. “Own operations” looks at the selected unit; “Including descendants” also includes the units beneath it. Parent indicators use the records for that scope, not an average of team scores.

Why is my score missing? NovusLens needs both an applicable calculation rule and the required current evidenceCurrent evidenceA view that uses only measurements recent enough to count. The “What we were told” view uses recorded statements instead.. Missing, conflicting or expired inputs can leave a figure unavailable. It is not zero. Open the calculation’s reason and ask the measurement owner to review the missing input or rule.

Capability, Authority and Responsibility describe agent accountability, a different set of questions.
